GTC Students Receive Awards and Scholarships at 2012 Ceremony

Gwinnett Tech’s 2012 Awards Ceremony marks the end of another year of success for GTC students. Family and friends filled the Gwinnett Center Performing Arts Theater to watch their loved ones receive awards and scholarships in honor of their outstanding achievements.

“It’s a night where our students are able to be recognized for their hard work [and] enthusiasm and get to share it with their family and friends,” says Gwinnett Tech Foundation Executive Director Mary Beth Byerly.

Throughout the course of the evening nearly $200,000 in scholarship funds were awarded through the Gwinnett Tech Foundation with the support of local business leaders like Clyde and Sandra Strickland and Matthew Holtkamp.

Gwinnett Tech Building Operator Certification® Program Receives Energy Star Award

Gwinnett Technical College’s Building Operator Certification® (BOC) program was recently named a 2012 ENERGY STAR Award for Excellence winner for its outstanding contributions in consumer education to promote energy-efficient tools.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC) for its Building Operator Certification program. Gwinnett Tech is the BOC provider for Georgia.

The Building Operator Certification program teaches facilities personnel how to bring HVAC, electric and lighting systems to their most efficient level of operation to promote energy efficiency. The course series consists of classroom training, project assignments to be completed at the participant’s facility, and in-class exams administered at the end of each day of training.

Interiors Students Enjoy “Living Learning Lab”

Gwinnett Tech’s interiors department has everything needed to give the home makeover pros on HGTV a run for their money. Students in the program are able to put their hands on the latest in home decor, kitchen and bathroom materials and more, thanks to what program director Susan Arnold calls their “living learning lab”.

“They can utilize all the products that are currently available to interior designers and kitchen and bath designers and we call it a living learning lab because every space is so fully utilized,” Arnold says.

Situated in a quant brick house on the edge of GTC campus, the lab boats a full kitchen complete with high-end appliances by Sub-Zero/Wolf along with a stunning array of fine wooden cabinetry. Crates of carpet, paint and tile samples line the upstairs walls and even the bathrooms are decked out with designer flooring, wallpaper and fixtures.

AGCO Corporation Donates $75,000 to Legacy of Lives Campaign

AGCO Corporation has donated $75,000 to Gwinnett Tech’s Legacy of Lives Campaign to support expansion of the college’s Bioscience Technology program.

The funds will be used to underwrite a second, full-time Bioscience faculty member, making it possible to increase enrollment in this program. This faculty member will also play a vital role as a liaison to the region’s growing bioscience and environmental sustainability communities.

“We are so pleased to partner with AGCO Corporation and value this very generous gift that enables us to grow our capacity in the Bioscience area,” says Sharon Bartels, President, Gwinnett Tech. “AGCO’s support permits us to help students to become self-sufficient and contributing members of our community and through their work, make an even greater contribution to sustainable environments worldwide.”

Gwinnett Tech’s Developing HIT Program Already Earning Accolades

Leaders from both Gwinnett Tech and Georgia Tech were recognized at this year’s Health IT Leadership Summit for their work in creating a new Health Information Technology (HIT) certificate program. The program stems from a $1.65 million grant that will be used to enhance the state’s capabilities in health information technology (HIT).

Gwinnett Tech President Sharon Bartels says the nomination is reassurance of Metro Atlanta’s need for a one-year certificate program for college credit in health information technology.

Right now, both schools are hard at work finalizing the curriculum that is specifically designed to help veterans, the underemployed and those unemployed enter the fast-growing HIT field. GTC also launched a two-year associate degree program in HIT this fall.

Gwinnett Technical College is one of four finalists for the Intel Innovation Award, a part of the 2011 Health IT Leadership Summit, which recognizes companies developing leading-edge technology to improve healthcare delivery and processes.

Gwinnett Tech to Host Virtual Town Hall Meeting on Workforce Development

Gwinnett Technical College will host a statewide Town Hall Meeting on Workforce Development, presented by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Development, on Thurs., Oct. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Busbee Center.

Participating from the Lawrenceville campus will be State School Superintendent John Barge, Commissioner of Labor Mark Butler, Gwinnett Tech President Sharon Bartels, and other elected and business leaders, connected with a host of satellite venues across the state that will live-stream the panel discussion. The event is open to the public.

“We want to maximize participation from the broadest possible audience to discuss topics including Georgia’s workforce development needs, unemployment, soft skills and Georgia’s growing workforce needs in industries such as infrastructure, bioscience and logistics,” says Tricia Pridemore, executive director, Governor’s Office of Workforce Development.
